Things I Learned From My First Wedding Photography and Videography Gig

1.) Bringing along a second photographer is a necessity.

At first I wasn't sure if I would need backup. It was a small wedding at an already beautiful venue. Oh boy was I wrong. Nobody can be looking at everything at all times. Even if you're a great photographer, you will miss moments at a wedding. So bring people to be your extra eyes. I am so grateful to my friends Jessica and Angela that helped me out and made sure I stayed sane.

2.) Know what camera is best for any situation.

Between Angela and I, we had three different cameras that each served a different purpose: two photography cameras and one video camera. I had longer lenses on my photography camera and Angela has a shorter one. This way we could get up close or focus on the overall energy. My Black magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k was especially helpful in lower light. I could record moments and take high quality screengrabs later.

3.) Be comfortable asking questions about schedule and any moments the couple wants captured.

I was lucky enough to have known the bride for quite a while so I was comfortable communicating with her before and during the wedding. If things changed, we'd check in to make sure we didn't miss important parts of the reception that the couple wanted captured.

4.) Digital photography is great - you can take SO MANY photos.

Less is not more in event photography. I'm very happy I have numerous ways of storing photos, including numerous SD cards and an external hard drives. I knew I could keep taking photos the whole time.

I had a great time learning about how to capture a wedding on camera. I look forward to future opportunities and breaking into new fields of photography/videography!
